ATOL protection explained — what it means for your holiday
When you book a holiday, you want to know your money is safe. ATOL and Protected Trust Services exist to make sure it is. Here's what they mean in plain English.
ATOL Protection
Covers package holidays that include flights. Managed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
Protected Trust Services
Covers holidays without flights — UK breaks, cruise-only, accommodation-only bookings.
Your money is ring-fenced
Payments held in trust until your trip is complete. Safe even if a supplier fails.
What is ATOL?
ATOL stands for Air Travel Organiser's Licence. It's a financial protection scheme managed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). If a travel company that holds an ATOL licence fails financially, ATOL ensures you either get a full refund or are brought home if you're already abroad.
ATOL protection applies to most package holidays that include flights. When you book through an ATOL-protected agent, you receive an ATOL certificate confirming your booking is covered.
What is Protected Trust Services?
Protected Trust Services (PTS) is an additional layer of financial protection. It covers holidays that may not include flights — such as UK breaks, cruise-only bookings, or accommodation-only arrangements.
PTS holds your holiday payments in a trust account until your trip is complete. This means your money is ring-fenced and protected even if the travel company ceases trading.
What does this mean for you?
It means your money is safe. Whether you're booking a fly-cruise to the Mediterranean, a family villa holiday, or a multi-stop trip across three countries — your payments are protected from the moment you book.
You don't need to worry about what happens if a supplier goes bust. You don't need to rely on credit card chargebacks or travel insurance claims. The protection is built into the booking.
How Shannon Loder Travel is protected
I operate as an Independent Travel Consultant with Jamie Wake Travel (a trading name of Wake Enterprises Limited). Jamie Wake Travel holds an ATOL licence and is a member of Protected Trust Services. Every booking I make is covered by one or both of these schemes.
This is one of the reasons I chose to work with Jamie Wake Travel — because proper financial protection matters, and I want my clients to have it as standard.
